Big news for everyone who edits content in ExpressionEngine: Wyvern v6.0 is here, and it is our most ambitious release yet. This version enters AI mode and now ships with CKEditor 5 built in. A new major version, a new editor core and a whole new way of working with content.

Wyvern enters AI mode
With v6.0.0, AI becomes part of Wyvern itself. AI mode is designed to help editors work faster and smarter, right inside the ExpressionEngine control panel. No switching between tools, no copy-paste dance between browser tabs. Just you, your content and a helping hand where you need it.

Powered by CKEditor 5
Under the hood, Wyvern now includes CKEditor 5. For developers, that means a modern, well-maintained editor foundation. For editors, it means a smoother and more pleasant writing experience. The best of both worlds, packed into one add-on.
Highlights
- CKEditor 5 at the core: the editor has moved from CKEditor 4 to CKEditor 5. Your existing toolbars are translated to CKEditor 5 automatically.
- New toolbar builder: build your toolbars with drag & drop, CKEditor 5 icons and a live preview.
- Fits right into the control panel: the editor follows the ExpressionEngine control panel theme (light, dark, ...) and its UI uses the language of the logged in member.
- Smarter styling: wysiwyg.css is now scoped to the editor automatically, with body referring to the editable area. Wyvern also ships with a new default wysiwyg.css and wysiwyg.js.
- Built for ExpressionEngine 7: Wyvern now uses the ExpressionEngine 7 add-on installer, database migrations and control panel routes.
- Cleaner requests: uploads, pages, templates, image sizes and the CSS per field each have their own action instead of the shared act_route action.
- CKEditor license key: a new setting to add your commercial CKEditor 5 license.
Breaking changes to check before you upgrade
- Wyvern 6 requires ExpressionEngine 7+ and PHP 8.0+. Still on ExpressionEngine 6? Use the legacy package (legacy_versions/ee_wyvern-v5.7.0.zip).
- Toolbar buttons that no longer exist in CKEditor 5 are dropped: Cut, Copy, Paste, PasteText, PasteFromWord, Scayt, CopyFormatting, CreateDiv, BidiLtr, BidiRtl, Unlink and Flash.
- The Styles dropdown (wysiwyg.js) needs a CSS class per style. Styles with only inline styles are skipped.
- "Extra CKEditor Config Options" now takes CKEditor 5 options, with dots for nested options and JSON for lists.
- The undocumented {wyvern_action_url} global variable has been removed.
